At Brooklyn Middle STEAM School (BMS), seventh grade students in the Gateway Technology elective class learned the basics of coding in a unit called “Secrets and Safes.” Using critical reading processes as a way to build background information, students explored the importance of cybersecurity through reading the fictional story “Hacked!” They then applied their knowledge to build and code their own security devices using various classroom materials and a microbit.

Students chose to design their security device to protect either a notebook, a safe, or a room with an alarm or restraint.

“All of the designs were incredibly creative,” said teacher Kalyn Brix, technology integration teacher at the school.

BMS offers many elective options to help its students explore their interests in a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, arts and math topics. Learn more about opportunities at BMS at bms.osseoschools.org.
